Who controls the future?

In chapter 2 (part 3), Winston is being tortured and beat down by O'Brien. Winston is "re"- taught how to believe the way that "big brother" wants him to. During this time of torture O'Brien holds up five fingers and says "how many fingers am I holding up," but Winston knows that he must say that there are four fingers because he must believe what the party wants him to believe. This shows that no matter how strong you feel about something, a little bit of pain can make your own opinion go away. This part of the book shows that no matter what you it has to be what the party wants, and they always have to be right. This thought also brings the thought of " whoever controls the past controls the future," this implies that whomever controls what is going on in the world that Winston lives in, will control how it will become in the future. This means that with the party controlling the world and how people think, they will most possibly control the world in the future, which is a very scary thought.

  1. I completely agree with you on this. It is really interesting how the party is able to control the past to a point where they determine what reality is in the present and; therefore, what the future will eventually become.

  3. I agree with Taylor also, in that in order to save Winston's life, O'Brien must convince Winston to believe in Big Brother and have faith in him. This is saying you can't believe in what you want, Big Brother is forcing everyone to believe in his ways even though it may not be the truth.

  4. I agree with you. Its sort of scary how controlling the party is and how cruel they can be. Pretty much their control is "2+2=5 and you better believe it or we are going hurt you." They have so much power that they can force people to question the basic facts of life.

  5. I agree with all this. It is scary to think that Big Brother has the ability to rewrite the past and control the future. Thus, people are being easily brainwashed because they have no choice but to believe in everything Big Brother is saying because they know they have no power over Big Brother
