Is Winston a sex addict?

One quote that i found very odd and surprising was in chapter VI when Winston describes his experience with the prostitute. "When I saw her in the light she was quite an old woman. fifty years old at least. But I went ahead and did it just the same." I thought this was incredibly odd because Winston never appeared to me as anyone who would crave sex so much as to do it with a 50 year old woman. He vividly describes her disgusting features like "paint plastered on her face" and "no teeth at all" but disregards them and continues to have sex with her. After reading the first few chapters of Winston being very boring and quiet I assumed he was one of those men who lived his life with no intention or desire to have sex. But apparently I am very wrong.

  1. I dont think that Winston is a sex addict, its just that they only are allowed with the intention of making a baby.

  2. I think that Winston isn't a sex addict he it is more so the fact that he likes doing things that Big Brother would not want them to do. So i think that he more of a person that likes to live life on the edge.

  4. I don't think Winston is a sex addict. Winston, having to live in a place where everyone is being watched, makes it hard to make love to someone without getting in trouble. I think that since it had been so long that he had had sex, it didn't really matter how young or old the girl was. He just wanted a pleasant feeling that would maybe make him less stressed. Otherwise, sex doesn't always have to be the answer.

  5. I agree what with what Avery said. Winston does not agree with Big Brother, thus his actions reflect that. He is not a sex addict, he was just looking for a way to release some emotions while defying Big Brother's rules at the same time

  6. Actually, while reading the first part of chapter 2, all he wants from the girl that said, "I love you", in the letter, is sex. He talks about her young youthful body and how he would like to make love to her. This shows he really needs it in a way. Do you guys agree ?

  8. Hi guys - what do you think this scene with the prostitute reveals about the Party's dehumanization of people? What does sex have to do with the Party's control?
